Belt Wrestling “Alysh”

What is Alysh?
Alysh is the national belt wrestling of the Kyrgyz people, where both opponents grab each other’s belts and aim to throw or lay the opponent on their back without releasing the belt grip.
The name comes from the Turkic root “alysh,” meaning “wrestling.”
It is officially recognized as a distinct style under the United World Wrestling (UWW) as “belt-wrestling (Alysh).”

Alysh has its roots in ancient nomadic traditions of the Kyrgyz and Turkic peoples: warrior-wrestlers practiced skills important for mounted and ground combat.
Today, it is not just a sport but part of cultural heritage, with competitions held at festivals, celebrations, and major ethno-sporting events like the World Nomad Games.
